When can I start an exercise program?

If you are already an exerciser prior to pregnancy, and your medical practitioner gives you clearance to continue, you should be able to maintain your existing level during your first trimester. As the months progress, you will find the need to cut back on intensity and weight. If you are a professional athlete or body builder, you need to be acutely aware of the all the changes that occur during your pregnancy and not to over do it.

If you were not an exerciser, the sooner you start the better. You must first get clearance from your doctor.

Regardless of whether you are already an exerciser or new to exercising, you must educate yourself about the dos and don'ts prior to starting your program. It is very easy to get injured during pregnancy, so please listen to your body.

If you participate in group classes or work with a personal trainer, ask him/her about their knowledge of working with pregnant clients. Make sure they understand the changes your body is going through and how to use exercise to work with those changes. Make sure you feel confident about their knowledge before signing up. And, always remember the ABC'S of Prenatal FitnessÖ.use the 12 exercises as your guide on what you should be doing.
