I noticed that there is no reference to lunges in the ABC'S of Prenatal Fitness Program. How come?

When you are pregnant, your body produces a hormone called relaxin. Relaxin's job is to loosen the connective tissues to accommodate the structural changes. One area directly affected is the pelvis. The right and left pubic bones of the pelvis are connected by cartilage and tissue called the pubis symphysis.

In the lunging position, the position of your legs, as well as the weight of the baby, can put undo pressure on the pubis symphysis. This may cause a shift in the pubic bones. The result is sharp pain in that area. High intensity aerobics, kickboxing, and running can also cause a shift.

Strengthening your legs is critical during pregnancy. Squatting not only accomplishes the same goal as lunges, but it also is a great position to practice for birthing!
