Most of the literature I read states that I shouldn't let my heart rate exceed 140 beats per minute (bpm) while doing aerobics. Is that true?

The American College of Obstetrics and Gynecologists now recommends that you gage your level based on perceived exertion. In other words, on a scale of 1-10, you should work on a level of a 6-8 (somewhat hard to hard). The true test is the talk test. If you find that you are unable to have a conversation while engaging in aerobics, you are working too hard.

Many exercising women who are already fit, will find that the 140bpm just isn't enough. That is why basing their level on perceived exertion is recommended.
